Book
Introduction
The seeds for this book were planted over breakfast with a tired entrepreneur
named Pete.
I was trying to explain the concepts that would help him go to the next
level in his business and his life.
I said, 'Picture yourself as a younger man setting out to achieve greatness
- somewhat like the main character in many traditional hero tales. See yourself
catching the moon or gathering the rain clouds or stealing fire from the sun!
It starts out well. You return triumphantly but then the obligations that come
with your achievement overpower you.' He was nodding despairingly. 'You have
to change the way you think,' I said. 'The hero figure is no longer an appropriate
model for you.'
He breathed deeply and sighed his agreement.
I came home and told Christine I had stumbled on a good model for my
New Entrepreneur Coaching Program
Later my friends, the Leach family from Papua New Guinea, helped me
flesh out the authenticity of the analogy.
It has become the perfect vehicle upon which to base my mentoring program
and I have told the story many times. Now in book form it captures the
main elements of what will make an entrepreneur's life simpler, more
effective and happier.
Entrepreneurs don't have to be overburdened, get sick, break up their
families or die before their time. They can have more time off than other
people, they can suffer from LESS stress and they can increase their
income honestly.
The tragedy is that until recently no one has shown them how.
As an entrepreneur you are numbered among naturally inspired individuals.
You instinctively know how to start a venture, launch an invention, create
a market, make a difference and take charge. You are a natural go-getter.
You are also an endangered species because after you get going, your
kind is often killed and eaten by the living thing you have created.
I've found over 25 years of working with entrepreneurial business owners
you are most likely to be
> achieving far more than most people
> expecting too much of others, your family included
> working long hours
> guilty about your poor quality of life
> worried about competition and the economy
> burdened with too many details and roles
> frequently lonely and misunderstood
> reluctant to trust your employees
That's not the way it has to be and there is a way out of it without
selling up and living in a caravan by the beach. In this book you will
probably identify with the hero and his exploits, his success and his
horrific frustration. Then you will no doubt empathise with him as he
is confronted, cajoled and castigated by his old mentor.
Hopefully, you will then team with the hero and finish the story in
your own life.
My expectation
I expect this book to whet your appetite for more help. I expect you
to realise there is much more to life than you now see. I expect that
you will seize the day once more - not as a lonely hero, but as a wiser
more prudent 'new' entrepreneur.
