An
excerpt from Manage & Lead Without Losing Sleep
Introduction
I rang a client company and asked, 'Can I speak to Neil please?' The
receptionist said, 'No, Neil is in Sydney.'
'Well, how about Jerry?'
'No,' she said, 'Jerry is in Melbourne.'
I said, 'What about John?'
She said, 'No, John's tied up.'
'Really?' I exclaimed.
'Yes, every time Neil and Jerry go always we tie John up!'
That's one way to manage people!
Management, as you will discover from this book is not supposed to be
easy. Years ago in parliament, former Prime Minister, Mr Malcolm Fraser
quoted a line from George Bernard Shaw's 'Back to Methuselah' and Australia's
half witted cynics made him a laughing stock for being arrogant and silver-spoon-bred.
Sadly he will be remembered for their ignorant misinterpretation of his
meaning rather than his genuine intention. But that in itself is an illustration
of one of the curses of management: being misunderstood and misquoted.
The whole quotation is one of the most delightful pieces and I, like
Mr Fraser, quote it often. It is totally appropriate when discussing
management.
Life is not meant to be easy, my child:
But take courage: It can be delightful.
A witticism occurred to me as I read the text of this book before sending
it off to the printer:
To live above
With those we love:
That will be glory.
To live below
With those we know:
That's another story.
This book, is part of the 'other story' like its older family members, Make
More Money from Every Sale and Five Star Service on a One Star
Budget, is a do-it-yourself business manual designed to help you
with three things:
1. You'll get motivated to continue doing the things that matter; whether
you are at this time struggling with your people or blessed with untold
loyalty.
2. You'll find this is a good way to stand back from your team and assess
each member and then work with them to bring the best out in them.
3. You'll have the tools in your hand to guide your team members toward
participating in creating a profitable business.
You have a cheap manual (and in many cases where is has been given you
as a gift, a FREE manual) which duplicates the kind of work I've been
doing in companies for many years and which might have cost them thousands
of dollars in consulting and training fees. It has cost you much less,
yet if you do the exercises and share them with your people you could
get thousands of dollars of value from it and some more restful nights'
sleep.
